Like father like son, from mother to daughter, sisters at heart, brothers in arms or blood brothers… As many expressions as possible scenarios. Blood or recomposed, united or broken up, the family sphere has so much to tell. Cinésérie.com has today decided to focus on the primordial place that the father figure can hold in cinema.

The attachment that a daughter can have for her father speaks to us as much as the tenderness that the son feels towards his mother, and vice versa. However, the feelings of abandonment, betrayal, injustice or even rejection are never very far away, lurking in the shadow of our more or less well-founded certainties. Let us turn more specifically to films where fatherhood holds a major place in the absence of the mother.

Kramer against Kramer

Signed Robert Benton, Kramer against Kramer (1979) tells the story of a drifting family. And for good reason ! Exasperated by the professional priorities of her husband Ted (Dustin Hoffman), Joanna Kramer (Meryl Streep) decides to leave them him and their son Billy (Justin Henry). The father must then reconcile overnight between her son’s education and his work of advertising. Despite the difficulties, he manages to forge a very strong relationship with Billy. But a few months later, Joanna is back. She starts legal proceedings to obtain custody of the child

The drama attaches to the importance of the father figure through divorce, an innovative theme for the time. Hoffman is endearing and Streep as gentle as he is ruthless. And here we are transported in a whirlwind of emotions between moved smiles and tears in the eye throughout. A moving film where the father-son relationship is beautifully highlighted !

August 15th

Released in 2001, the comedy August 15th produced by Patrick Alessandrin also focuses on the father figure. Max (Richard Berry), Raoul (Jean-Pierre Darroussin) and Vincent (Charles Berling) join their wives in La Baule on the weekend of August 15. Tired of a fortnight of rain and childcare, the wives, however, decided to take a few days of vacation alone.

Max, who had decided to leave his wife, must then managing her stepdaughter, a fairly independent teenager. Having no children, Raoul remains alone with his dog even though he had decided to quit smoking. Vincent to finish must learn to control your educated children in a very permissive way. All three will face everyday problems and immerse themselves in Reading the book The couple in question by Louise Abel. The latter encourages women to take back control of their lives. A trio of actors dropped, immersed in experience with which the spectator can easily identify. A delight !

War of the Worlds

It was in 2005 that Steven Spielberg offered us his drama SF War of the Worlds. Divorced Docker, Ray Ferrier (Tom Cruise) maintains only episodic relationships with son Robbie (Justin Chatwin) and daughter Rachel (Dakota Fanning). A few minutes after her ex-wife and her husband told her entrusted with custody of the children, a powerful thunderstorm breaks out. Soon, huge mechanical devices arise from beneath the earth and disintegrate human beings. Ray, Rachel and Robbie decide to go to Boston. All three cross a series of trials that will both unite and separate them.

The adaptation of the homonymous novel by HG Wells (1898) brilliantly deals with humanity in the face of a hostile alien race. Just as scared as his children but determined to save them at all costs, Tom Cruise is sublime as the father eager to make up for lost time. It is in the midst of chaos that relationships are woven and the power of fatherhood blossoms. The feelings unfold and the fear of losing the other inevitably swells. A must-see disaster movie.

Captain Fantastic

Matt Ross unveiled his comedy-drama in 2016 Captain Fantastic. In the United States, Ben (Viggo Mortensen) and Leslie Cash (Trin Miller) decided to give their six children an unconventional alternative education. They left everything to set up camp in the middle of the woods. Bodevan (George MacKay), Kielyr (Samantha Isler), Vespyr (Annalize Basso), Rellian (Nicholas Hamilton), Zaja (Shree Crooks) and Nai (Charlie Shotwell) grew up in this extraordinary setting. Children’s lives must be a source of permanent enrichment. The father figure takes particular care of it: physical training, self-sufficiency through hunting, culture in abundance, foreign languages and critical thinking are on the menu.

Suffering from severe psychiatric problems, Leslie had to be hospitalized. The resulting events push the family to return to the “ordinary” world. A shock for Ben who suddenly begins to to doubt the unconventional education he gave to his children. Without giving any lessons in life, the film leads us to question ourselves. Can we really live cut off from the world and be self-sufficient as a family? The marginal lovable that Mortensen embodies is no longer so sure after the departure of his wife. However, the man facing his six children is a real hero which perfectly assumes its role. A captain who holds the helm and the winds of change. Fantastic !

“Without the volunteers, there would be no festival”, assures Christian Guyomar, co-president of the 20e Groix International Island Film Festival (Fifig), in Morbihan, which takes place from August 18 until Monday August 23. This purebred Groisillon knows it all the more since he himself is a volunteer and does not consider his function. “Only like that, otherwise it doesn’t make sense”. This year, 140 of them – aged 12 to 85 – are working for free so that the festival can exist. They give time, energy, part of their vacation since the start of the event. In addition to these selfless workers, there are around twenty volunteers from the management team or the board of directors.

Only a very small part of them are paid. Audrey Pesché, who took over the general programming and coordination of the festival in March, is the only full-time employee. Some, like Laurent Morisson, in charge of musical programming, Thierry Bastien, in charge of administration, or the accountant are paid part-time, while a dozen intermittents are employed during the duration of the festival (sound system, decoration , lighting, general coordination, kitchen). Not to mention the circus circus agent called “Le Crieur”.

The pandemic has upset the organization

The return of the festival, after an almost non-existent year 2020 due to the pandemic, has proved complex. The management hesitated until the last moment to maintain this event, which combines a competition of very demanding documentaries, focused on islands around the world, and parallel selections devoted to Regards d’îliennes, to young audiences, to the Ponant Islands. , etc. Not to mention the concerts, exhibitions and meetings.

Cult films, good entertainment or adored turnips despite their obvious flaws, the Netflix catalog is not lacking in diversity and that is why the editorial staff of CNET France takes its mission to heart every week: to help you select the best of the streaming platform (SVoD).

This weekend, three films are recommended. Let’s go to the conquest of an impregnable city in Sluts, let’s say yes to everything with the method Yes Man and face smart sharks in Scared. Three rooms, three atmospheres therefore.

What movies to watch or watch again on Netflix this weekend?

A good mythological peplum: Troy

The summary of the film

In ancient Greece, Helena, queen of Sparta, fled with Paris, prince of Troy. Her husband, Menelaus, then asks her brother, the powerful king of Mycenae, to help her get her back. The latter sees the opportunity to conquer the impregnable city and summons all the kings of Greece and the most powerful warriors to achieve it. Among these fighters is the proud Achilles whose actions may well decide the outcome of this war.

CNET France’s opinion

Although the film is not really considered a major work, including by Brad Pitt himself, Sluts still impresses on many levels. The scale of this epic fresco, inspired by a major event in Greek mythology, is already to be noted. Two thousand extras were necessary to give substance to the two armies and to reconstitute Homeric battles having nothing to envy to those of the Lord of the Rings.

Besides the well-oiled choreography of the fights, Achilles, all about strength and agility every time he picks up the sword, is also impressive. In his introductory duel, the catch of the beach or his confrontation with Hector, Wolfgang Petersen’s camera does not lose a crumb of its actions and the rendering is fluid.

The actors are invested and each delivers a service to the height of his character. If we can deplore the freedom taken from Homer’s original text, the feature film is still worth a look. Especially since it is the representative of a genre unfortunately too little exploited by the studios. In summary, Sluts is conscientious entertainment, a little too scholarly at times, but which fills our eyes. There is no reason to shy away from his pleasure.

  • Here’s the epic trailer for the film:

A film that makes you smile: Yes Man

The summary of the film

Depressed and disillusioned, Carl no longer has any zest for life. To go up the slope, he decides to follow a personal development program based on a simple idea: say yes to everything. A magic word that could well upset his daily life, and even his entire existence.

CNET France’s opinion

Yes Man is typically the example of a film that feels good. A feature film that gives you a smile, makes people laugh and lifts your spirits. It is a solar film, a romantic comedy whose strings we quickly see, while willingly taking in the game.

The main argument of the feature film is obviously called Jim Carrey. The actor gives it to their heart’s content in all situations and his performance is a pleasure to see. It’s happy, completely crazy and the man’s grimaces always have their effect.

At his side, Zooey Deschanel gives him a brilliant response, bringing his quirky universe and his touch of madness. We quickly fall under its spell, as it brings freshness to Yes Man. And if the feature film gently gets entangled in its naive optimism, it is easily forgiven. It’s a simple film, but still positive, to see without hesitation.

  • Watch an excerpt from the feature film:

A nanar turned cult: Blue Fear

The synopsis of the film

At an underwater research center, scientists are trying to prevent diseases of the human brain by experimenting with sharks. But these unnatural tests have a consequence that will put their lives in danger: the intelligence of sharks becomes much higher than normal.

CNET France’s opinion

Scared is the very example of the film which brought together all the ingredients for yet another turnip with killer sharks. Except that the feature film has managed to earn its stripes over time. The action-packed plot is punctuated and mischievously conducted by director Renny Harlin, who has fun shaking up the viewer’s expectations.

On the part of the celebrations, we can only appreciate one of the most courageous reversals of the cinema (yes, absolutely), a passage in the kitchen or the regularity with which the sharks show a certain sadism to torment psychologically their future meals.

We watch Scared with pleasure as the film manages to reproduce all the codes of the genre and to divert several to offer a unique horrific delirium. Only big downside: the special effects already very average at the time. Since then, they have obviously aged extremely badly. It prevents that Scared is the missing link between the first degree of Sea teeth and the assumed stupidity of a Sharknado. A film to see for lovers of the genre therefore.

Peter Winther’s Aftermath is a slow-burning horror thriller that has plenty of surprises in store to keep fans of the genre engaged. Kevin and Natalie’s marriage is going through a rough patch, and Kevin insists that a change of scenery will bring them back to their former happiness. However, a series of inexplicable events causes them to spoil their sleep, and they discover a larger plot around the events. If you liked the horror cocktail from the murder mystery thriller, we might have some recommendations for you. You can find most of these Aftermath-like movies on Netflix or Amazon Prime.

7. After Hours: What a Troubled Night (1985)

Martin Scorsese’s work features many films, and the neo-noir comedy thriller “After Hours” is one of the most underrated. Set in the SoHo neighborhood of New York City at night, the story revolves around the miseries and misadventures of Paul Hackett in the course of a single night. The story takes center stage in Kiki’s New York studio, where Paul has to return more than once on his destined journey home. The mystery and the elements of break-in are there, and the minimalist apartment gives it a distinct spatial character if you want to change the mood for something more comedic while staying on the same theme of the house, After Hours is a great in the mix.

6. The Silent House (2010)

Directed by Gustavo Hernández, “The Silent House” (original title: “La Casa Muda”) is a Uruguayan horror film of fierce tension and disturbing plot. Repair Hands Laura and Wilson arrive at a dilapidated cabin in the middle of nowhere, and from there begins a series of seemingly inexplicable episodes. Events overflow with control, and the ominous ending presupposes the paranoia created throughout the film. But the brilliance of the film lies in the creation of a menacing terror. If you liked the atmosphere of suspense in ‘Aftermath’, ‘The Silent House’ will know how to appease you.

5. Malevolence (2011)

What if the janitor in your apartment doesn’t want to see you happy? Horror in the Spanish language has become a genre in itself. The famous horror director Jaume Balagueró creates one of his best cinematic moods in the psychological horror thriller “Malevolence” (originally titled: “Mientras Duermes”). Caesar thinks he’s threatening, but the act of voyeurism exposes him to far more devastating secrets. The mishap slowly gets out of hand in the multiple encounters between César and Clara, not always under the best of circumstances. If you’ve got a general penchant for home invasion thrillers, this is the movie you should head to next. Malveillance is available for streaming on FilmoTV and Shadowz.

4. House (1977)

Japanese horror films are known to be scary, but Nobuhiko Obayashi’s “House” (originally titled: “Hausu”) is not one of them. The movie is a horror comedy that’s part fairytale horror, part B-movie limbo, and part outrageous fun. Gorgeous visits her aunt’s house with her friends Prof, Melody, Kung Fu, Mac, Sweet and Fantasy. The holidays start with a lot of fanfare and excitement, but the aunt comes to reveal her most evil wishes. If you want a change of mood for something light and rejuvenating while staying true to the home and family theme, “Home” is a great starter to spice up the list.

3. Terror on the Line (1979)

Rarely can there be anything scarier than a stranger calling you and asking you to watch the children. The urban legend of “the babysitter and the man from above” has been used in many films, but a few of them have perfected it as Fred Walton’s OG mystery thriller Terror on line. A high school girl is named a babysitter and she begins to receive strange calls. On the other side, a man who has been convicted of murdering two children is on the run. It would be your best bet if you want to go back to home invasion thriller classics. Also, there is a 2006 remake that has some merit, but we recommend watching the original.

2. She (2016)

When it comes to the horrors of a home invasion, few movies can capture the victim’s trauma as elegantly as Paul Verhoeven’s French horror thriller Elle. Isabelle Huppert shines in the central role of weaving a poignant and provocative story of pride and prejudice. The story revolves around the main character, the iron-willed CEO of a video game company, who sets out on a quest to find his attacker. The perpetrator is hidden under a seductive face, and the truth brings her closer to herself. Elle’s whitewashed house symbolizes its ruthless yet colorless character, yet it is full of surprises. If you enjoyed Aftermath’s Home Invasion Cocktail Party, She’s a movie you must add to your must-see movie list. It is available in streaming on Canal + and Amazon Prime Video.

1. Relic (2020)

There are home invasion movies and movies when the house takes on a distinct character. Natalie Erika James’ psychological horror thriller Relic is a slow and claustrophobic experience in itself. The story centers on a family of three, an amnesiac matriarch, her daughter and her granddaughter. The ending takes us through the labyrinthine corridors of the claustrophobic house, which becomes a relic in its own right. If you’re looking to create a horror theme without falling back on scare-of-jump tactics, Relic is a disturbing stunt from a movie.

Certain films did not have the opportunity to be able to be released in theaters, and unfortunately went by the wayside, sometimes for a long time, or definitively, for various reasons … Here are ten examples.

The destiny of a cinematographic work is not always, far from it, a long quiet river, paraphrasing a little easily the title of Etienne Chatiliez’s film.

The history of cinema is thus punctuated with examples of films which, for very diverse reasons, have not been able to find their way to obscure theaters: chaotic production, trial, cruel encounter with current affairs de facto torpedoing the entire strategy. marketing built around the work … There is no lack of reasons.

Here are ten private theatrical films, with the how and why.

The Day the Clown Cried (1972)

It was to be a turning point in his career as an actor – comedy director, after Doctor Jerry and Mister Love and other The Fallen of these Ladies. In 1972, Jerry Lewis -Joseph Levitch of his real name- directed The Day the Clown cried; undoubtedly one of the most famous “lost” reels in the history of cinema. Light years from his previous films, this film was to be Lewis’s poignant contribution to the Holocaust.

Or the story of a clown arrested by the Gestapo for making fun of Hitler, and sent to a concentration camp for political prisoners. From there he is dispatched to Auschwitz, where he is responsible for entertaining the children who are led into the gas chambers. Before eventually joining them, thus delivering his last performance …

A pitch of absolute darkness and powerful, very jarring, if it was not precisely Lewis’s talent to maintain the balance of his film. Alas, he ultimately never wanted his film to come out. At the start of 2013, he justified his choice during a meeting with the public: “In fact, I was deeply embarrassed by the subject of my film, I was ashamed of it, I couldn’t find deep inside myself the necessary justification, why I was making this film. Maybe the result would have been was wonderful, but I preferred to stop “. Jerry Lewis passed away in 2017 and sold the film’s negatives to the Library of Congress on the condition that they were not disclosed for 10 years. We will have to wait until 2025 to hope to see these famous images …

The Hunt (2019)

Universal Pictures

Expected in the United States at the end of September 2019, the controversial film The Hunt by Craig Zobel saw its release canceled in the United States by Universal, including in France until June 2020, in the too sensitive context of the Dayton killings and El Paso, which killed 30 people in August 2019. The film features individuals who consider themselves to be part of the country’s elite, who kidnap poor eras and other rednecks to hunt them for sport …

A modern version of the Hunts of Count Zaroff. Some seeing a political metaphor between the Democrats, assimilated to the elites, who would drive out the rednecks, assimilated to the Republicans … President Trump did not fail to attack the film in a very convenient way, estimating “very dangerous to release this kind of film in the country”… An explosive subject in a socio-political context which was no less so.

Empire of The Deep (2010-2015)

Screenshot / YT

A budget of $ 140 million brought together by a Chinese real estate tycoon, four directors who have succeeded at the helm and threw in the towel, including the Frenchy Pitof; several Western actresses approached for the title role, including Monica Bellucci and Sharon Stone, before the title role was played by Olga Kurylenko; forty different versions of the script … It is an understatement to say that Empire of the Deep was an artistic shipwreck … Boxed at the end of 2014, with great difficulty, this film – dubbed a time Mermaid Island USA Vs The Plesiosaurs– (!!!) was due for release in China in December 2015. Still no release on the horizon, which will probably never happen. The fact that part of the film crew has still not been paid may explain this slight delay …

A Rainy Day in New York (2019)

Mars Movies

In early 2018, as Woody Allen was caught up in the wave of #MeToo and accusations of sexual abuse from his adopted daughter Dylan, the storm warning also rocked giant Amazon, which produced Wonder Wheel and A Rainy Day in New York, the director’s last film to date. The group then wondered about the future of their collaboration. The company was indeed considering, according to the Vulture site which reported the information, either to cancel the theatrical release.A rainy day in New York, or to minimize its output by simply making it visible only on VOD.

The Woody Allen case was all the more difficult for Amazon as Roy Price, the former director ofAmazon Studios, was forced to resign after being accused of sexual harassment by a producer. The group having finally decided in favor of canceling the film’s release in the United States and therefore not distributing it, the filmmaker then sued for abusive breach of contract. In August 2019, Woody Allen suffered a heavy legal setback, since a large part of his complaint was retoked by a New York judge. In France, the film was distributed by Mars Films, and it was released in September 2019.

Made in France (2016)

Universe movie

Made in France or the unfortunate coincidence of a calendar meeting between fiction and tragic news. Initially scheduled to be released in theaters on November 18, 2015 and then on January 20, 2016, Nicolas Boukhrief’s film ended up being released in France, but only on VOD platforms, at the end of January 2016. With the terrible series of jihadist attacks occurred on November 13, 2015 in Paris and which left 138 dead, this story about the creation of a jihadist cell precisely responsible for sowing chaos in Paris was simply impossible to promote and go out in theaters.

My Best friend’s Birthday (1987)

An original Tarantino ??? And yes ! It is even his very first film, shot a handful of years before his Reservoir Dogs, that will reveal it to viewers around the world. This story of a man dumped on his birthday by his girlfriend, seeking comfort from his best friend, is unfortunately unseen for some accidental reason.

A fire in the laboratory where the film was located literally reduced to ashes a large part of this film, which was around 70min. Tarantino only managed to save 36min from this disaster, fully visible on Youtube Moreover. Apart from pirate DVDs which circulated under the coats but offered little more anyway, it is from now on the only way to see the beginnings of QT apprentice filmmaker.

City of Lies (2018)

Miramax Films

Hurts me, Johnny … Directed by Brad Furman, City of Lies, worn by the duo Depp / Forest Whitaker, tells the story of policeman Russell Poole, known to have tried to unravel the mystery of the deaths of the two rap stars 2Pac and Notorious BIG In July 2018, we learned that Johnny Depp had struck a stage manager on the set of the film, named Gregg Brooks.

Almost a month after these revelations, the distributor decided to cancel the film’s release scheduled for September 7 of the same year. The director had said that Johnny Depp had pushed him violently as he came to inform him that the day of filming was drawing to a close. The technician reported that the comedian appeared “drunk”, and that he had it “hit twice in the chest”. Still according to the statements of Gregg Brooks, the comedian of 55 years would then have shouted: “I’ll give you $ 100,000 if you punch me in the face”.

Following this incident, Gregg Brooks was asked to sign a confidentiality agreement preventing him from speaking about this episode. The man, who refused to sign the document, was fired the next day. The technician filed a complaint against the production company of the film. On August 29, 2018, Bank Leumi (an Israeli bank) filed a lawsuit against the distributor, claiming millions of dollars for unpaid collateral due to the film’s being canceled. Ultimately, City of Lies has ended up being released with us, but directly on DVD …

I Love You Daddy ! (2017)

Circus King Productions

Expected in the United States on November 17, 2017, the feature film directed by Louis CK, I Love You Daddy, was not finally released in American theaters, or even in France. A decision that followed the cancellation of the New York premiere of the film, which came at the last minute, before accusations against the comedian were revealed by the press.

A New York Times article published the testimony of five women accusing Louis CK of‘”sexual misconduct”. Suffice to say that in the particularly heavy context of the Weinstein affair, the film’s career was killed net, while the person concerned has been keeping a low profile for all this time … In the wake of these revelations, the HBO channel had to ‘Elsewhere distanced himself by announcing that the American would not appear as planned on the show Night of Too Many Stars and that the artist’s projects appearing on the channel’s on-demand services were withdrawn.

Don’s Plum (1995)

Don’s Plum, or the bad story of a film of friends turning into a pitched battle through lawyers … Shot in 1995, the film starred a young Leonardo DiCaprio and his sidekick Tobey Maguire. A period prior to the success of Titanic or Spider-Man. Playing two characters not really nice, obsessed, violent and macho, in a group of friends dining at the restaurant and remaking the world, the two headliners did everything to prevent the film from being released in theaters, out of fear. that the public does not confuse them with their characters on the screen and that this taints their respective careers to come. This will be confirmed later by Tawd Beckman, the co-producer of Don’s Plum.

The film was nevertheless screened at a very small handful of festivals years later including the Berlinale in 2001, where it received mixed reviews. Between April 1998, date of filing of a complaint against the two actors by the producer of the film, Dale Wheatley, until January 2016, when the same was notified by the actors’ lawyers of the obligation to withdraw the film that he had put online to be viewed free of charge, it was a Homeric legal fight that took place, and tvery well told by Slate Moreover. There is always that Don’s plum is visible on Youtube, If you feel like it.

The Last Film Festival (2016)

The Last Film Festival is the last film of the great Dennis Hopper, who died in 2010 at the age of 74. Directed by Linda Yellen, the film embroidered a plot around an obscure film festival representing the last hope of the producer of a bad movie. Supported by rather experienced actresses like Jacqueline Bisset or Leelee Sobieski, the work was actually shot in 2009. But it was only seven years later that the film could be completed, thanks to a fundraiser made by Crowdfunding … In addition to lengthy and chaotic post-production, the test screenings of The Last Film Festival were catastrophic, to the point of mortgaging any release of the work in theaters.

Three films marked the start of the Swiss festival: a thriller presented under the Netflix banner, a French auteur film dedicated to adolescence and a poetic work from Lebanon. Three proposals and the same nostalgia for the cinema of the 70s or 80s.

“Cinema is back”: on all the screens of the Locarno festival, after the ritual passage of the leopard symbol of the event, this invigorating and reassuring slogan is displayed. The cinema is back and, despite the all too famous cold drop, which settled in Ticino for the opening night, despite the Covid which lingers, business is picking up. But, curiously, to this need that we feel everywhere to start again, the filmmakers oppose a desire to put the reverse gear, in films shot before the pandemic.

“Beckett”, a baroque manhunt

Cinema is a flashback. And nostalgia for the 1970s does not lack cachet in Beckett, the thriller of the Italian Ferdinando Cito Filomarino, presented in opening under the Netflix banner – it will be possible to see it from August 13 on the platform (the trailer here). Shot in English and produced by director Luca Guadagnino, who loves retro himself and brings the talented cinematographer of Call Me by Your Name and Suspiria, Beckett reconnects with paranoid American cinema whose The Three Days of the Condor, by Sydney Pollack, has remained the unmistakable model since 1975. But the film’s atmosphere, which is its great asset, is enriched by a somewhat baroque Italian influence and the effects of the cold Greek sun in winter.

This list is not fully exhaustive. It focuses on the most anticipated sci-fi movies. You can complete it through the comments.

The dates indicated are subject to caution due to the current health context.

Reminiscence – August 2021

Reminiscence will be out at the end of the month and will be carried by two actors who are probably no longer needed to present, Hugh Jackman and Rebecca Ferguson.

The action will take place in the near future and as Miami has been swamped by climate change. A private investigator named Nick will then be hired by very wealthy clients so that he can find their precious memories. He will then find himself trapped in a time loop.

Dune – September 2021

It was impossible to draw up this list without citing Denis Villeneuve’s Dune.

Highly anticipated, the latter will have the heavy task of making us forget the first adaptation of Frank Herbert’s novels. An adaptation which unfortunately did not meet the expected success.

Of course, history has not changed. She will always follow the adventures of Paul Atréides, a young man extremely gifted and inhabited by a strange power. A power that will allow him to survive the betrayal of a house opposite to that of his father and to achieve the incredible destiny to which he is promised.

Note that if this film is a success, sequels could emerge. Frank Herbert’s literary saga is indeed very substantial and all the volumes that compose it cannot be adapted into a single film.

Venom 2 – October 2021

And we open the ball with the second part of the adventures of Venom, with the inescapable Tom Hardy.

The story will take place sometime after the first film and this time it will set our favorite antihero up against a brand new threat embodied by Carnage. Carnage, whose role will be played by Woody Harrelson, whom it is no longer necessary to present.

The Eternals – November 2021

Another highly anticipated film. The Eternals will be released in theaters starting November 3 at home.

A somewhat peculiar film that will focus on the Eternals, a human race from the Marvel universe. A race created by the Celestials to protect Earth from their counterparts, the terrible Deviants.

The film will therefore offer us another light on the MCU, and it will also be able to count on a cast of first choice. Angelina Jolie will indeed be present, the same for Kit Harington and Richard Madden who will finally meet after their common experience on Game of Thrones.

Ghostbusters: the legacy – November 2021

November promises to be a busy month. In addition to the film dedicated to the Eternals, moviegoers will be able to discover the new part of the Ghostbusters license.

This time, the story is also a little different since it will focus on a single mother and her two children while the three of them settle in a small town. A city that will allow them to discover the heritage of the grandfather, an eminent figure… of ghost hunting.

Matrix 4 – December 2021

Many were surprised by the return of The Matrix to the cinema, the third film coming to close the story.

However, it seems that Lana Wachowski still has things to say since a fourth part will be broadcast on December 15th.

Little information has filtered through so far. We just know that most of the actors of the first three films will respond, with the exception of the one who played Morpheus. On the other hand, it is possible that his character is present, while being played by a slightly younger actor.

Under house arrest, Kirill Serebrennikov, the director of Petrov’s Fever, was from August 2017 to April 2019. He could not be present at Cannes for the presentation of Summer, in competition in 2018, and, despite his new selection in competition, will not be either this year: he was sentenced to three years in prison for allegedly embezzling funds allocated to a play and cannot leave the country; if he did not appeal, however, he does not repent.

Because it’s good Repentance (1984), Soviet film by Tenguiz Abouladzé that Cannes Classics shows in a restored version thirty-four years after the Grand Prix du jury snatched away hard in 1987 by the cantor of Perestroika, Elem Klimov, from the president of the jury Yves Montand, who did not believe in the repentance of the Soviets, and especially its absence that we find in films from the territory of the former USSR this year. It is also to this work of memory and, if necessary, of possible repentance that the Ukrainian Sergei Loznitsa has tackled in Chapter Yar. Contexte, presented in a special screening: by mounting images from German and Soviet archives, he draws the framework in which the biggest massacre of the Shoah by bullets took place, in September 1941, in Kiev, thus holding out a mirror to those who continue to confuse history and national novel.

These four films from the former USSR come together in the non-acceptance of a given situation. The hallucinations of the Petrov family in Kirill Serebrennikov’s film seem to be the only (dismal) escape routes. Obsessed, in the literal sense of the word, by a flu that does not let them go – The Petrovs in the flu is the Russian title of Alexeï Salnikov’s bestseller adapted by Serebrennikov (translated into French by The Petrovs, the flu, etc., published by Les Syrtes editions, in 2020), the three members of the family wander between nightmares and reality in a post-Soviet Russia which only has a “post” in name. Shot on private funds only, just like At residence, by Alexeï Guerman Jr. (ironically: the main actor of this film, Merab Ninidzé, played the grandson of the dictator in the film Repentance !), Petrov’s Fever puts Kirill Serebrennikov back in the spotlight.
