Pathé subsidiary Cinémas Pathé Gaumont — one of Europe’s largest exhibition chains — operates 133 theaters with more than 1,300 screens throughout France, the Benelux region and Switzerland. Which means that when it comes to market growth, this industry leader must look beyond building new multiplexes.
“The network of theaters in our principal territories is now very dense,” says Cinémas Pathé Gaumont CEO Aurélien Bosc. “Our priority is to consolidate our position within those territories while revitalizing the filmgoing experience.”
Since taking over in 2018, Bosc has overseen a strategy of inner consolidation and outward development.
In 2019, the circuit owned by Jérôme Seydoux acquired the French group CineAlpes and the Benelux-based EuroScoop, adding 22 more locations to its roster. At the same time, Bosc and his team have seized opportunities across the African continent, where they have a number of upcoming greenfield developments in Tunisia, Senegal, Ivory Coast and Morocco.
Still, the exhibitor’s biggest project has been one of upmarket transformation, overseeing a half a billion-dollar investment and modernization plan to refurbish existing theaters and develop new and premium offerings. On that front, Pathé Gaumont now operates more than 100 premium theaters, and holds a near monopoly on Imax, Dolby Cinema and 4DX theaters throughout its territories.
“Offering the highest quality technologies combined with ever greater comfort seems the most relevant path to follow,” Bosc says. “Because now more than ever, the customers are very demanding.”
In order to meet those demands, this upmarket revamp must extend beyond the silver screen. “Today, the theatrical outing has to stand apart,” Bosc says. “We have to provide our customers with an extended social outing experience and offer them a great show defying all comparison with at-home viewings.”
With that in mind, Pathé Gaumont has also followed a data-driven strategy to rethink the front-end experience. “The fact that nine out of 10 tickets are now sold online has given us an incredible opportunity,” says the CEO. “Digital ticketing has put an end to long wait-lines at the main entrance, and that allows us to reconvert or transform those large surface areas toward new means, all with an eye toward improving the customer experience.”
And if such open space becomes a lounge where filmgoers can linger over a drink, or a restaurant where they might share a bite before a screening, it thus becomes a new commercial opportunity for the exhibitor to seize.
“Once we’re able to track our clients’ interests and ticket-buying habits we can also connect with them,” says Bosc. “Being able to create a direct link with the customer is a godsend for the exhibitor.”
While Pathé Gaumont used its collected data to reach out and connect with loyal customers over the long months of pandemic-mandated lockdowns, the exhibitor has since employed that asset to drive admissions by playing a more active role in the marketing process, and as Bosc sees it, forcing a paradigm change.
“By capitalizing on our knowledge of moviegoers and the unique size of our customer bases, we could partner with major distributors, especially with U.S. studios, earlier on in the value chain. Together, we have jointly built an ambitious and innovative way to promote films via our digital ecosystem, and the results have been stellar.”

A Taiwanese American director goes to China to make a universal tale about passion and power
After winning the Academy Award® for Best Director for Brokeback Mountain, Lee turned to a story that spoke to his past and identity. Adapted from Eileen Chang’s short story, Lee’s Lust, Caution explores China during the Japanese occupation through a troupe of activist actors turned spies who target a high-ranking Chinese collaborator in Shanghai named Mr. Lee (Tony Leung Chiu-Wai). Their intricate plans go awry, however, when the young woman (Tang Wei) cast to seduce the political traitor falls for the man. The sultry espionage drama spoken entirely in Mandarin became an international hit, cementing Lee’s reputation as a truly international filmmaker. Ang Lee directing Lust, Caution
While Lee’s early films—such as Eat Drink Man Woman and The Wedding Banquet—reflected his Taiwanese upbringing, he soon demonstrated that no subject or genre was beyond his cinematic reach. From repressed 70s suburban desire in The Ice Storm to the American Civil War in Ride with the Devil to a gay love story set against the rugged Wyoming landscape in Brokeback MountainLee seemed to intimately understand all periods and cultures. However, in returning to Asia for Lust, CautionLee learned how the familiar can often be the most foreign. “It’s harder for me to make Chinese films, because first of all, psychologically, it’s more personal. The texture is more personal to me. It just hurts more,” Lee explains.
As an artist, Lee related most to the themes of deception and desire in Chang’s story. Feeling “very much like the girl in this movie,” Lee relates how in film, it is only ‘by pretending, you connect with the true self…My characters are all trying to find the truth about themselves through pretending. To me pretending is filmmaking.” Riffing on elegant European love stories, American Noir, and Hitchcock’s NotoriousLee not only captures a rarely told chapter of Chinese history in Lust, Cautionbut explores the ways both passion and power can be creative acts of representation. “Both politics and love may be inseparable from the lies we tell ourselves about them,” writes Slate.

Reframing Chinese history through his cinematic imagination, Lee constructs a universal tale, one that, explains Filmotomyis able to “tap into the darkness and sexual desires that lie in us all.” Excluded from competing in the Academy Awards because of a technicality, Lust, Caution nevertheless received global acclaim. Lee won the Venice Film Festival’s highest award, the Golden Lion, when Lust, Caution premiered there. Later the film swept Taiwan’s Golden Horse Awards, being nominated in eleven categories and winning seven trophies, including Best Film, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay. Slapped with a NC-17 rating for its frank sexual scenes, the Chinese-language film went on to be an international success, becoming the highest grossing NC-17 film of all time. “It is another resounding success for Ang Lee, whose film-making has such mass and substance,” proclaimed The Guardian. “His movies are like huge, exciting new buildings for us to gather round and wonder at.”

Streaming giant Amazon Prime Video recently unveiled its biggest content slate in India. It consists of over 40 new titles, in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu, across original series, original movies and co-productions that will be released on the platform over the next 24 months.
At an event held in Mumbai to unveil the same, the leadership team of the platform took part in a fireside chat with filmmaker Karan Johar about their future plans and vision for Amazon Prime Video in India.
During the fireside chat, Kelly Day, VP International, Amazon Prime Video, said India is one of their fastest-growing markets. She further credited the Indian team at Amazon Prime Video India for its success. “I think one of the things that is really interesting is that India is truly an innovation hub for us. A great example of that is our Prime Video Mobile Edition (PVME) service. India is the first market where we rolled out a mobile-only service for our customers here. PVME has done quite well in the country and we are using that as a launchpad to roll out the mobile edition product in a variety of countries all over the world. Therefore, I really see the opportunity here in India, to continue to innovate, to continue to serve customers, and to continue to learn how we can build on that and expand Prime Video all over the world.”
The announcements also include the launch of Prime Video Store, its transactional video-on-demand (TVOD) movie rental service in India, which will allow Prime subscribers as well as non-subscribers to access movies on rent. They also announced a few multi-year licensing deals and co-productions with some of India’s biggest studios like Dharma Productions and YRF.
Day added that Amazon Prime Video follows a multi-pronged strategy for India. The platform has forayed into original movies and got a number of direct-OTT releases on the platform. To cater to the sports viewership demand, they also recently launched a live sports offering. “Over the next five years, our plan in India is to double the investment that we just made. We consider India to be one of our most strategic markets and we are going to continue investing in a truly differentiated service here,” said Day.
Gaurav Gandhi, Country Head, Amazon Prime Video India, meanwhile said that movies are an important vertical for them in India. He said when they launched movies on the platform, by entering into partnerships with production houses, the response was phenomenal.
“We realised the fact that we can play a very important role in getting the films to the customers. We are taking one step forward there with original films now which we are announcing today, and of course, expanding on co-productions such as ‘Ram Setu’, amongst others. With the launch of our movie rental service, I believe it is one more way for customers to consume content besides joining Prime so I think this way we are fuelling the creative economy, by playing a role so that everybody can make more movies and content for our customers.”
According to James Farrell of Amazon Studios, Indian content on Amazon Prime Video is performing well across the world. He said the Amazon India original- ‘One Night Stand’ will soon be adapted for the German audience. “One in five of our customers are watching Indian content and doing so outside of India.”
“You’re seeing amazing, innovative stuff, and we’re going to see more of what’s coming up this year now. Not only are shows travelling but ideas are starting to travel the world,” he added.
The panel further spoke about how the platform is empowering the talent of women and different sections of society through their stories. According to Jennifer Salke, Head, Amazon Studios, the platform’s central philosophy is to be the home for talent, one that you can see and feel across the globe.
“All the incredible shows, all the scenes and all the shows one is going to hear about and the foundation, content on the service, none of it happens without incredible talent and artists who have big imaginations and can execute at the highest level. So being the home for talent for us means having the best teams on the ground.”
Adding to this, Aparna Purohit, Head of India Originals, Amazon Prime Video India, said they want to create a home for talent, a community and a safe space where creators feel supported and they feel that you’re willing to invest in them.
“We want to bring to life the vision of our creators, enable them and empower them. Finally, I would like to say that my team and I call ourselves the story chasers. We will go across the length and breadth of a country to find a good story and really develop them. I also feel that we do not ever dictate. We never let the creator’s vision gets diluted. So, we believe in casting for the characters. We have been a platform for so many new, talented, emerging independent voices. Almost 50% of our releases have new talent and 70% of our upcoming slate has been talent. We believe we are enablers, the storytelling chasers.”

Based on the 1986 Denis Johnson novel of the same name, The Stars at Noon is a romance thriller set in 1984 Nicaragua during Sandinista rule. Striking up a passionate romance, the two become entangled in conspiracies and sinister plots, and must band together to escape the increasingly dangerous country. In talks with Varietythe director of the movie, Claire Denis, describes The Stars at Noon as “[a story] about the fear and the terror of love, the fear of failure.”
The movie stars Margaret Qualley as leading lady Trish and Joe Alwyn as leading man Daniel. Initially, Robert Pattinson was set to play Daniel but left the project due to scheduling conflicts. Kingsman actor Taron Egerton was then supposed to replace him but stepped out for personal reasons.
Margaret Qualley began her career in 2013 playing Raquel, a minor role, in Gia Coppola’s teen drama High pole. Since then, she has gone on to star in several critically acclaimed movies and series, including The Nice Guys, Once Upon a Time in Hollywoodand Maidthe latter of which earned her a Golden Globe nomination. Actor Joe Alwyn is (perhaps unfairly) best known as Taylor Swift’s boyfriend, but has also starred in some great movies, including The Favourite, Mary Queen of Scotsand Boy Erased. According to French distributor Ad Vitam, Safdie plays a CIA agent, Reilly plays an American boss, and Ramirez plays a Costa Rican police officer. The Stars at Noon is directed by French director Claire Denis and co-written by Denis, Léa Mysius, and Andrew Litvack. Denis is known for the French movies Chocolat, Good work, and Trouble Every Dayas well as for her English-language debut, High Life: a sci-fi adventure starring Robert Pattinson as a convict turned astronaut who is sent along with other criminals on a doomed space mission. High Life is an A24 production, making The Stars at Noon Denis’ second movie with the studio.
Common themes in Denis’ movies include race, estrangement, and colonialism, though the director never limits herself to one genre. Earlier this year, she released the French romantic drama Both Sides of the Bladestarring Juliette Binoche as a woman embroiled in a passionate love triangle. Union Minister Piyush Goyal on Sunday inaugurated the 17th edition of the Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF) for documentary, short fiction and animation films and said he wants global production houses to mount their projects in India. The seven-day festival, organised in hybrid mode, has a line-up featuring 400 films from across the world, out of which 102 titles will be screened under the Competition Category — 35 in international competition and 67 in national competition.
At the ceremony, held at Nehru Centre Auditorium, Worli, the minister said small budget films like Vicky Kaushal-starrer “Uri- The Surgical Strike” and this year’s blockbuster “The Kashmir Files” became successful by chronicling true stories about India on the big screen.
While “Uri”, released in 2019, was based on Uri attacks that claimed the lives of 17 army personnel, “The Kashmir Files” chronicled the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits from the Valley in the 1990s.
“Those who make documentaries, art films and even animations, which has a huge role to play to today, seed new ideas and these ideas end up giving an important message, a new vision to the country. All of you are messengers, your work is broadcast through TV, OTT or feature films. Not just entertainment, you also contribute towards the unity of the country,” Goyal said.
In his address, the union minister said if major production giants like Marvel Studios and Warner Bros make films in the country, they will benefit from the massive Indian talent that is “highly skilled”.

“The talent that is there in the Indian film industry has brought global popularity through its work. I feel that in the future, we must focus on animation films, which have a lot of possibilities. It is easier to give a message to our young generation through animation. I also want Disney, Bros, Marvel Studios to come to India and make films here.
“That way the cost of filmmaking will be reduced. Our artistes are also highly skilled–be it photography, writing, acting–so we have a lot of talent to show. This talent will make India proud on the global level and will also generate employment opportunities for crores of artistes,” he added.

Manipuri documentary film “Meiram – The Fireline”, animation film from France “Castaway” and Japan’s short fiction film “Shabu-Shabu Spirit” opened the festival, organised by the Films Division of Ministry of Information & Broadcasting.
Bangladesh has been chosen as the ‘Country of Focus’ this year in commemoration of its 50 years of Independence. A special package of 11 films from Bangladesh including the acclaimed film “Hasina- A Daughter’s Tale” will be presented at MIFF 2022.
Union Minister for Information & Broadcasting Anurag Thakur, in his video message, said documentary cinema creates “the most significant impact”.
“It not only educates, inspires and motivates a change in the society, but also acts as a tool that transcends cultures and boundaries,” he said.
The inaugural ceremony was also attended by minister of state for Information & Broadcasting, Dr L Murugan, minister of state for Railways, Coal and Mines, Raosaheb Patil Danve and minister of state for Social Justice and Empowerment, Ramdas Athawale and festival director Ravindra Bhakar.
Minister of State for Panchayati Raj Kapil Moreshwar Patil, Minister of State for Finance Dr. Bhagwat Kishanrao Karad, Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting Neerja Shekhar, filmmakers Shaji Karun, Kiran Shantaram, Rahul Rawail and actor Dalip Tahil were also present at the event.

Written by Terrio, the fictional series, which is targeted for Prime Video, is described as an examination of the events surrounding the Boeing 737 Max. It will reflect various perspectives, focusing on a composite engineer character, to be played by Strong.

In an unprecedented move, the Boeing 737 Max was grounded worldwide in 2019 following jet crashes in Indonesia (Lion Air Flight 610) and Ethiopia (Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302), killing all 346 people on board.
Following the fatal incidents, investigations found a flaw in an automated flight control system called the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS). Boeing was charged with fraud and admitted that two of its flight technical pilots misled the FAA about the flight system. The company in January 2021 agreed to pay $2.5 billion to settle the criminal case. (In April of this year, families of U.S. crash victims petitioned a U.S. federal judge in Texas to scrap the settlement and reopen the criminal case.)
Mark Forkner, a former chief technical pilot for Boeing, was indicted over giving federal regulators “false, inaccurate, and incomplete information” about 737 Max’s MCAS. He was subsequently acquitted. FAA’s ban on the Max was lifted in November 2020 when the aircraft was cleared to resume service. Boeing has since ramped up production, aiming at 47 a month by the end of 2023.
Strong is best known for his Emmy and Golden Globe-winning role in HBO’s hit television show Succession as well as his appearances in such movies as The Trial Of the Chicago 7, Molly’s Game, Lincoln and The Big Short. He stars opposite Anne Hathaway and Anthony Hopkins in James Gray’s upcoming feature Armageddon Timewhich premieres in competition at this year’s Cannes International Film Festival; Focus Features is expected to release the film in 2022. The collapse of Anaheim’s deal to sell Angel Stadium to Angels owner Arte Moreno’s company looks like it will conclude without going to court.
Officials for SRB Management, the partnership Moreno formed to buy the 150-acre stadium site, notified the city late Friday that they won’t fight the City Council’s decision Tuesday to void the deal.
“For almost a decade now, Angels Baseball has been working with the city to be able to continue to deliver a high-quality fan experience at Angel Stadium and create certainty on the team’s future in Anaheim,” SRB spokeswoman Marie Garvey said in a statement.
“There has been a lot of misinformation and falsehoods stated throughout this process and we want to be clear, we negotiated in good faith with all elected officials and city staff and created a fair deal that was good for Anaheim and Angels Baseball,” she said. “Given that the City Council unanimously voted to cancel the stadium land agreement, we believe it is the best interest of our fans, Angels Baseball, and the community to accept the city’s cancellation.
“Now we will continue our focus on our fans and the baseball season.”
It was unclear earlier this week if either the city or SRB would sue over the ending of the deal. The sale agreement allowed SRB to seek up to $5 million plus legal costs if the city defaulted.
The revelation last week that Mayor Harry Sidhu, who spearheaded stadium negotiations, is under federal investigation for alleged corruption, partly in connection with the sale, led to criticisms that the deal was “tainted.” Sidhu has not been charged with a crime.
Sidhu resigned Tuesday, and that night the City Council voted to end the deal. The city on Wednesday asked SRB to agree that the deal was void.
“We welcome and thank the Angels for their mutual understanding of what is called for in this moment,” Anaheim Mayor Pro Tem Trevor O’Neil said in a statement. “It is the right thing to do.”
The now-defunct deal would have sold the stadium and surrounding land for $320 million, about $170 million of which would have been credited back to the buyer for developing community benefits including 466 units of affordable housing.
The city also had been contending with state housing officials, who in December declared Anaheim violated an affordable housing law requiring that developers of housing for lower incomes be given the opportunity to pitch for surplus land. The city has always dispute that the law applied to the stadium sale; the two sides had reached a settlement that was on the verge of being finalized by an OC Superior Court judge before the investigations were announced.
SRB’s statement did not address whether Moreno is interested in returning to the bargaining table, but O’Neil said the city might be.

The collapse of Anaheim’s deal to sell Angel Stadium to Angels owner Arte Moreno’s company looks like it will conclude without going to court.
Officials for SRB Management, the partnership Moreno formed to buy the 150-acre stadium site, notified the city late Friday that they won’t fight the City Council’s decision Tuesday to void the deal.
“For almost a decade now, Angels Baseball has been working with the city to be able to continue to deliver a high-quality fan experience at Angel Stadium and create certainty on the team’s future in Anaheim,” SRB spokeswoman Marie Garvey said in a statement.
“There has been a lot of misinformation and falsehoods stated throughout this process and we want to be clear, we negotiated in good faith with all elected officials and city staff and created a fair deal that was good for Anaheim and Angels Baseball,” she said. “Given that the City Council unanimously voted to cancel the stadium land agreement, we believe it is the best interest of our fans, Angels Baseball, and the community to accept the city’s cancellation.
“Now we will continue our focus on our fans and the baseball season.”
It was unclear earlier this week if either the city or SRB would sue over the ending of the deal. The sale agreement allowed SRB to seek up to $5 million plus legal costs if the city defaulted.
The revelation last week that Mayor Harry Sidhu, who spearheaded stadium negotiations, is under federal investigation for alleged corruption, partly in connection with the sale, led to criticisms that the deal was “tainted.” Sidhu has not been charged with a crime.
Sidhu resigned Tuesday, and that night the City Council voted to end the deal. The city on Wednesday asked SRB to agree that the deal was void.
“We welcome and thank the Angels for their mutual understanding of what is called for in this moment,” Anaheim Mayor Pro Tem Trevor O’Neil said in a statement. “It is the right thing to do.”
The now-defunct deal would have sold the stadium and surrounding land for $320 million, about $170 million of which would have been credited back to the buyer for developing community benefits including 466 units of affordable housing.
The city also had been contending with state housing officials, who in December declared Anaheim violated an affordable housing law requiring that developers of housing for lower incomes be given the opportunity to pitch for surplus land. The city has always dispute that the law applied to the stadium sale; the two sides had reached a settlement that was on the verge of being finalized by an OC Superior Court judge before the investigations were announced.
SRB’s statement did not address whether Moreno is interested in returning to the bargaining table, but O’Neil said the city might be.
